The Problem With Standard Curcumin
Curcumin is notoriously difficult for your body to absorb. When consumed in standard form, it clumps together in the digestive tract - forming aggregates too large to cross the intestinal wall into the bloodstream. The result: the vast majority of what you swallow is never absorbed. Studies have confirmed that standard curcumin has extremely poor bioavailability, making the dosage on the label a poor indicator of what your body actually receives.
To compensate, many brands add piperine (black pepper extract) to force absorption. While piperine does increase uptake, it comes with a cost: it inhibits drug-metabolizing enzymes in the liver and intestines, interfering with how your body processes medications.
